ACMF Scholarships Honoring the legacies of those who served our community
The family of Esther Moore Chandler donated over $100,000 to endow a perpetual scholarship in memory of their beloved mother. A dynamic and energetic woman with a generous heart, Mrs. Chandler’s children wanted her goodness and generosity to be always remembered. Unlike a one-time gift, this scholarship follows a student throughout their entire educational journey.
Known to everyone as “Doc,” Dr. Stevens was called to medicine as a child and never looked back. After serving as a Navy physician and performing surgery at sea during a storm, he moved to West Union in 1962 and cared for patients for 45 years — sometimes paid with chickens or homemade items. If you knew him, you knew his famous hugs.
Dr. Mathias served as a physician in Adams County for over 35 years, starting his career with the National Health Service Corps. Known as “Doc,” he worked across hospitals, nursing centers, and emergency departments throughout the region. He valued the role he played in saving lives, always doing his best to help as much as he could.
Dr. Ashley joined the medical staff at Adams County Hospital in 1974 and served as Emergency/Outpatient Director and Adams County Health Commissioner for over 40 years. A man of many talents — country doctor, sailor, pilot, poet, and musician — he touched the lives of thousands before his unexpected passing on May 5, 2016.

- Must be an Adams County or Brown County, Ohio resident
- Enrolled or accepted at a regionally accredited institution
- Pursuing a career in healthcare (nursing, pharmacy, therapy, medicine, etc.)
- Dr. Dale Mathias scholarship is restricted to current high school seniors
