Bruce M. Ashley Scholarship

Bruce M. Ashley, M.D. began his medical career upon graduation from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1971.
In 1972 he was granted license to practice in Ohio and began working at a nonprofit community clinic. Within two years he joined the medical staff at Adams County Hospital and worked part time in the Emergency Department. In 1985 he began working full time and assumed the position of Emergency/Outpatient Director. In addition to working at Adams County Hospital, Dr. Ashley was part of the Emergency Medical Staff at Community Hospital in Springfield, Ohio and Scioto Memorial Hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio, where he also served as the Emergency Department Director.
In 1974 he began his duties as the Health Commissioner in Adams County, a position he held until 2016. He became an Ohio Registered Sanitarian in order to better serve his community. Dr Ashley also served his community by serving as the Medical Director for Adams County Emergency Services and EAST Ambulance EMS Service.
Dr. Ashley loved to learn and loved to teach. Upon deciding to practice Emergency Medicine, he furthered his specialty by becoming board certified in Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine, which he maintained until 2016.
He served as the Clinical Preceptor for Medical, Nursing, Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner students from Howard University, Capital University, NYU, University of Cincinnati, Marysville College, Otterbein University, and many more. Dr. Ashley was certified and an Instructor for Red Cross Water Safety; Advanced Cardiac Life Support; Basic Disaster Life Support; Advanced Disaster Life Support; and Advanced Trauma Life Support.
He was a Special Deputy and a member of the American Heart Association ACLS Ohio Affiliate Faculty, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Regional Faculty, Board of Emergency Medical Services, Region I Ohio Physician Advisory Board, and a Team Leader for the Ohio Public Health Leadership Institute.
